Spider Galaxy
A spider's web, as well as being an icon of horror films, can signify a hunting trap but also a home. The spider, after weaving a web, waits upon it until the prey is trapped. The spider feels the impact and struggles of its captive through the vibrations transmitted along the web, but at the same time, the spider resting in the center of the web is a highly visible target for other predators.
In this work, the negative spaces from a drawing of the central section of a spider's web - in other words, the spaces between the silky threads - form the basis for the construction of a wooden stage set. A choreagrapher of contemporary dance will create a work for a single ballerina for this specific setting.
